All the information below was kindly provided by Mrs Christina Taylor of the The Friends of Broadwater & Worthing Cemetery (www.fbwc.co.uk/).

Broadwater & Worthing Cemetery is the final resting place of Rev. Edward King Elliott (1828-1920) and his wife Mary Elizabeth Richey, their daughters Julia Louisa Richey Elliott (1855-1905) and Alice Joan Emily Elliott (1857-1950), and son Rev. Edward James Elliott (1863-1927), and the latter's wife Edith Helen Willey and son Charteris Frederick Venn Richey Elliott (1901-1969).

Although the headstone has been destroyed, records show that Alice is buried with one Maria Emma Smith (1874-1956), whose identity and relationship to Alice is a mystery to us. Please contact us if you know.

The two Reverend Edwards were rectors of the local church St. Mary's, the latter from 1905-1927, and the former for 52 years before that. Before that the rector for 56 years was Peter Wood, an uncle of Edward King Elliott. Wood's exact relationship is currently unknown but he might perhaps be connected in some way to Basil Woodd after whom Edward King Elliott's paternal uncle Basil Wood Elliott (1799-1814) was named.

The locations of the two remaining headstones are marked on the following map:

The text reads:

Sacred also to the universally beloved memory of Mary. Wife of the Rev. E. K. Elliott who departed this life at the Rectory to be with Christ: Novr. 2nd 1909.

"Her children arise up and call her blessed"

Also to the memory of the Rev. E. K. Elliott, for 52 years Rector of Broadwater, who passed away on Oct. 31st 1920. Aged 92 years."

According to Christina, the flint wall behind the above grave may have once delineated the Rectory's garden, or other land belonging to Edward King Elliott, who is thought to sold land to the cemetery board. Further information would be appreciated.
